Publish for free through our Subscribe to Open(S2O) pilot
When your research is published open access, it has the greatest potential to be more impactful. OA articles are more discoverable and more widely shared and used by researchers across the globe.
AIPP Articles published open access benefit from:
- 4x more views
- 2x more citations
- 1.5x more shares
As a not-for-profit publisher, we’re committed to supporting open access and accelerating the physical sciences. That’s why we’re piloting two of our most impactful journals— Journal of Applied Physics and Physics of Plasmas—with a new model to help you publish open access for FREE and to open your research to the widest audience possible.
How does it work?
Subscribe to Open (S2O) relies on institutional journal subscription renewals and subscriptions to pay for the open access publishing program for that entire calendar year. If enough institutions renew or subscribe, we will flip the journal(s) to OA for 2024. Any articles already published from January 1, 2024, to the decision to open date will be re-published under a CC-BY licence and the author will not incur a publishing fee. For the remainder of the year, all APC charges are waived, and all the content remains OA.
The decision to flip or not to flip will be made in early March 2024. With the help of our institutional customers, we will continue to support the physical sciences community to make open access possible for all, and to increase the impact and discoverability of this research. If we do not get enough institutional support to sustain the S2O pilot, then your published article will still be available to all researchers at subscribing institutions as usual, or you may choose to publish your article open access and incur the usual APC.
Advance science. Be part of an equitable future.
Submit your work to one of our two journals and you may benefit from the S2O program in 2024.
On average the publication time for journals in the S2O pilot is approximately three months. This is an average and can vary, so make sure you submit your work as early as possible for the best chance to publish for free.
Our expert editorial teams ensure our journals have the rigorous peer review processes you expect from a society publisher.
Journal of Applied Physics
Led by Editor-in-Chief Julia R. Greer, California Institute of Technology, USA, Journal of Applied Physics showcases research from across the world in current applied physics.

Have Questions? We have answers:
Q. How does the Subscribe to Open model work?
A: The Subscribe to Open model leverages institutional subscription revenues to support the transition of the journals to fully open access. Subscribing institutions are asked to continue their subscriptions as usual, and if enough libraries subscribe to meet our revenue target, the journal’s content becomes openly accessible to all for that year. So it is free to publish and free to read by everyone – no subscription required.
Q. Will my article be freely available to readers immediately upon publication under the Subscribe to Open model?
A. Yes, if the Subscribe to Open target is met, your article will be published as open access immediately upon publication, allowing for increased visibility and potential impact.
Q. What are the benefits of publishing under the Subscribe to Open model?
A: It allows you to make your research freely accessible to a wider audience without bearing the burden of article processing charges (APCs).
Q. Are there any costs or fees for authors under the Subscribe to Open model?
A: There are no costs or fees for authors. The model relies on existing subscription revenues to support the journal’s transition to open access each year.
Q. What happens if the journal does not reach its institutional subscription target? Will my article still publish open access?
A: We will decide each year in March whether or not we will be able to make articles published in Journal of Applied Physics and Physics of Plasmas in that year fully open access. If we find that we did not meet our revenue targets to support the program, articles will simply not automatically publish as open access for that year unless you choose to publish open access through our Author Select program. In this case, an Article Processing Charge (APC) would be applied.
Q. If I publish my article during a Subscribe to Open year, will it always be open access?
A. Yes, your article will be published open access under a CC BY license and forever be free to read.
Q. If I published an article in Journal of Applied Physics or Physics of Plasmas last year, will my article be made open access this year?
A: If you did not originally publish your article as open access, it will be accessible to readers at subscribing institutions, as usual. Your article will not automatically be made open access this year or in later years through the Subscribe to Open program.
